Brainstorming a Theme

Today, we are going to focus on concepts and themes for the yearbook. The #1 critique of the 2010 yearbook was that the colors and formats didn't match. In order to make the 2011 yearbook even better, we need to develop a theme that will continue throughout the book.

A yearbook theme can be developed through words, pictures and colors. We can use a quote or idea that continues throughout the book, and a color scheme that supports the mood and tone of the theme.

  1. With a partner, answer the following questions on a sheet of loose leaf. Brainstorm whatever you can think of about CHS and about the Class of 2011. What makes your school unique? What makes your class unique? What makes you stand out?
  2. What makes Constitution High School unique and different? What made you decide to come to CHS? (Don’t feel pressured to give a cheesy answer. Be honest – what do you and your peers believe that makes CHS different?
  3. What events, people or clubs best characterize CHS? Why?
  4. What unique characteristics does your class display? What makes your class stand out?
  5. What shared experiences has you class had? What memories stick out?
  6. Who are the most interesting people in your class? Why?
  7. What are some of your favorite memories at CHS?

After you have brainstormed, visit the following websites. Write down the ideas that you like!!!

View the powerpoint on this site. It goes along with the photocopies we went over today. The notes under the powerpoint explain the theme concepts. If you like a particular slide, write down the slide number.

Visit this website and look at actual themes from other yearbooks.

Write down ideas that you like, but keep in mind that we are somewhat limited in cover choices.

These websites are slightly dated, but they offer some good ideas for working with a verbal theme.
